Irving Oil resolves charges under the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act

Publication date

Saint John, NB – Irving Oil has reached a settlement with the Government of Canada related to charges brought under the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act pertaining to the training of employees and the misclassification of certain rail shipments of crude oil.

The investigation was commenced by Transport Canada as a result of the railway accident in Lac-Mégantic on July 6, 2013. The misclassification of crude oil did not cause or contribute to the railway accident in any way.

Irving Oil believes strongly in the importance of safety and regulatory compliance across all of our operations and we take these charges very seriously.

Over the last four years, Irving Oil has undertaken, through its Operational Excellence program, a comprehensive review of its procedures and systems relating to the transportation of dangerous goods. In addition, the company has enhanced the training programs for all employees involved in the handling, offering for transport, and transport of dangerous goods.

Irving Oil acknowledges and appreciates the work undertaken by Transport Canada to uphold rigorous standards around the safe transport of goods. The company will remain vigilant in all of our operations, upholding our commitment to safety for employees, customers, and communities.
