Irving Oil announces passing of Winnifred Irving

It is with sadness that we confirm the passing of Winnifred Jane (Johnston) Irving, beloved wife of K.C. Irving, founder of Irving Oil.

Winnifred was born on September 3, 1916, in Back Bay, New Brunswick, the only child of Thomas Robert and Martha May (McKay) Johnston. Winnifred grew up with Clara Hooper, who came to live with the Johnston family when her mother died.

Winnifred attended schools in Back Bay and St. George and business school in St. Stephen. Over her professional career as an Executive Assistant, she worked in Charlotte County in the offices of Welsh Sardine Company, the Bank of Nova Scotia and Connors Brothers. She moved to Saint John in 1945 and worked with the law firm of Porter, Ritchie & Riley. In 1955, she joined Irving Oil where she worked with K.C. Irving, and had a long, distinguished career.

Mrs. Winnifred, as she was fondly called by many Irving Oil employees, is remembered for her kind heart and cheerful laugh. Throughout the years, she always maintained an interest in what was happening with the business and the people of Irving Oil.

Winnifred is survived by stepsons James K. Irving and Arthur L. Irving and a large extended family. She was predeceased by her stepson John E. (Jack) Irving.

A private funeral service is planned.
